Negaunee Miners vs Iron Mountain

 Negaunee Miners vs Iron Mountain

The Negaunee Miners vs Iron Mountain in Negaunee, Michigan Friday, Sept. 20, 2013 and UPsportsphotos.com was there to catch some of the action!  It was a cold night on the Miners’ Field Friday night, a reminder that winter isn’t far off… bundled up on the sidelines in 3 layers and a hat and still shivering I marvel at the football players on the sidelines in spandex shrugging off the cold with ease.  Testimony that after passing one winter in the U.P. I still have a ways to go before considering myself a “yooper”.

I had heard that the Miners were off to a strong start this year and this was my first chance to photograph the Negaunee Miners varsity football team for the 2013 season.  They lived up to everything I had heard dominating the field from the very beginning of the game against the Iron Mountain Mountaineers.  Negaunee racked up 3 touchdowns in the first quarter alone while keeping the Mountaineers empty handed.  Austin Caya (34) made the first two touchdowns and Tyler LaJoie (20) not only made a fantastic interception but also scored the third touchdown of the game during the first quarter action between the Negaunee Miners vs Iron Mountain.

The Miners continued their domination over Iron Mountain into the second quarter with a touchdown by Tyler Jandron(2) and another by Zak Harsila (42).  By the end of the first half of the game the score was at 36-0 Negaunee. This brought us to the half time show with a great performance by the Negaunee Miners varsity marching band.  What would a game be without the band? I hope they know how important their role is in creating the atmosphere during sports events! Yes the action on the field excites us but it is the music that resonates in our bodies and plays on our emotions building up our anticipation and celebrating the victorious moments!

The third quarter wasn’t much different except that Iron Mountain was able to keep Negaunee from scoring this quarter.  Although they weren’t able to score themselves the Mountaineers were successful in keeping the Miners from widening the gap any further.

Finally, here’s a shout out to the fans that suffer the cold from the bleachers to cheer on their team! It’s great to see the community coming out to support. Only one critique… there needs to be some support for cleaning up after yourselves.  The mess in the stands after the game was huge, styrofoam cups and popcorn littering the ground like snow… only two gracious people stayed after to clean up and let’s just say they were well over their prime… Come on Neguanee, clean up after yourselves! You know the Ishpeming students stay after their games and work together with the same commitment to excellence as their football team and clean up all the trash in minutes… You’re not going to let yourselves be outdone by the Hematites fans are you?  ;)
